The purpose of this study was to determine if parathyroid hormone levels (PTH) correlate to brain speed and/or bone density.
Patients with blood levels of PTH above 30 have slower brain processing speed (P300), which is associated with dementia. It was already well known that hyper-PTH is associated with dementia, but the aging process and elevation of PTH may accelerate, contribute to, or be dynamically related to the electrophysiological precursors of dementia.
Our findings disclosed an empirically important association between levels of PTH and bone density as well as P300 speed, a known marker of dementia and brain processing speed. Delayed P300 processing and osteoporosis may correlate with the aging parathyroid gland.
